Hyderabad, Oct 29 (IANS) The remnants of severe cyclonic storm Montha, which crossed the Andhra Pradesh coast late Tuesday night, caused floods in some districts of Telangana on Wednesday, disrupting normal life and disrupting road and rail traffic.

Extremely heavy rains in some districts since early Wednesday have resulted in flooding of low-lying areas, submergence of roads and railway tracks and massive damage to crops.

Road connectivity has been disrupted at many places due to overflowing drains, lakes and springs. Railway tracks at Warangal and Dornakal railway stations were submerged in water, leading to cancellation and diversion of many trains.

Extremely heavy rainfall occurred in Warangal, Hanamkonda, Mulugu, Mahabubabad, Jaishankar Bhoopalpally, Nalgonda, Siddipet, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Sircilla and Nagarkurnool districts.

From 8.30 am to 10 pm, Bhimdevarapalle in Hanamkonda district recorded the highest rainfall of 41.9 cm. According to the Telangana Development Planning Society, 35 places received extremely heavy rainfall of more than 20.50 cm, while 68 places recorded rainfall of more than 11.50 cm.

Same district, same district. The maximum rainfall recorded was 33.28 cm.

The IMD has issued a red alert for Jangaon, Warangal, Hanamkonda, Mahabubabad, Siddipet, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Karimnagar and Sircilla districts and an orange alert for Adilabad, Nirmal, Asifabad, Mancherial, Jagtial, Peddapalli and Bhupalpally districts.

According to the IMD, after crossing the Andhra Pradesh coast, Severe Cyclone Montha weakened into a deep depression over north Andhra Pradesh and adjoining areas of south Odisha, south Chhattisgarh and north-east Telangana. It further intensified into a depression over South Chhattisgarh and surrounding areas.

Warangal district authorities have declared holiday in all educational institutions. Vijayawada Intercity Express and East Coast Express were stopped at the station due to waterlogging on the railway tracks at Warangal railway station.

Similarly, the movement of trains was disrupted due to waterlogging on the tracks at Dornakal railway station in Mahabubabad district. South Central Railway canceled or diverted many trains.

The bus station in Hanamkonda turned into a lake. The roads of the town were also filled with water due to overflowing drains.

A DCM vehicle along with its driver was washed away in flood waters in Khammam district. The vehicle was washed away in Nimmavagu stream near Janaram bridge in Konijarala mandal.

A person who was swept away in the Kagana river in Vikarabad district was rescued by the local people. The incident occurred near Veerishettipalli in Tandoor mandal.

In Nalgonda district, personnel of police and other departments rescued 500 students of a government residential school trapped in flood waters. The building of the Tribal Welfare Boys’ Residential School at Kommapalli village in Deverakonda mandal was submerged in water flowing from a nearby stream, and students were screaming for help.

In view of the heavy rains, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has directed the entire administration to be on high alert.

He directed the district authorities to evacuate the families living in low-lying areas and shift them to relief camps. The state irrigation department was alerted to closely monitor the water level in all projects, reservoirs and other water bodies.

He said that district collectors should be alerted before releasing water from overflowing reservoirs. Sand bags should also be kept ready on water bodies and reservoirs filled with heavy water flow.
