Bhubaneswar, 6 October (IANS) during an attack on a Durga Puja immersion procession on Sunday evening (5 October), on Sunday evening (5 October), during a bike rally organized by Visa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Sunday evening (5 October), in view of fresh violence in Cuttack in Cuttack, officials on Monday imposed a curfew in many sensitive areas of the city.
Speaking at a press conference in Cuttack on Sunday, Police Commissioner S. Dev Dutta Singh said, “The situation has been brought under control. A curfew has been imposed in the violence affected area and other weak areas for the next 36 hours. Any person participating in the riots will be strictly dealt with. Strict action will also be taken against those involved in today’s violence.”
The Police Commissioner also informed that curfew will be applicable in the next 3 hours in the next 3 hours in the market, Mangalbagh, Cantonment, Puri Ghat, Lalbagh, Bidanasi, Markatnagar, CDA-Page II, Malgodown, Badambadi, Jagatpur, 42 Mauja and Sadar Police.
However, he clarified that milk and basic grocery items in medical and other essential services, government offices, schools, schools and market areas are exempted from curfew.
Singh said that four persons were injured in a violent incident by some persons during Durga Murti immersion in Dargh Bazaar late Friday night.
He said that six accused persons identified through CCTV footage analysis were arrested on Saturday and presented in the court. Singh also rubbed a rumor on social media platforms about the death of one of the four victims injured during the violence on Friday night. He also warned of action against people who spread such rumors on social media.
The uproar police said that during the conflict, four persons suffered injuries. Of these, three (Pintu Mahar, Mukesh Mahar and Subhashree Jena) have been discharged after treatment on 4 October. The fourth person (Shankar Biswal) remains under medical care and is currently stable, talking and is not in any danger. There is no fatal in relation to this incident.
“Opposing the incident on Friday night, the VHP had proposed to organize a bike rally. However, the commission did not allow the police, apprehensive the potential disturbances. Ignoring the police’s instructions, the protesters attempted to enter the sensitive areas, where the police stopped them and warned them. Baton allegations and Rabar bullets,” said the police commissioner.
The Home Department had earlier suspended internet services in Cuttack City and adjoining areas for 24 hours on Sunday. Meanwhile, VHP has called a 12 -hour shutdown on Monday, protesting against the violent incident in the city’s Dargha Bazar area on Friday night.
