Cuff Syrup Killing Children: Maharashtra, Telangana Flag Coldrif Batch, MP, after death in Rajasthan

Various states across India like Maharashtra, Telangana and Karnataka have taken precautionary action to prevent the consumption and supply of cold cuff syrup after the deaths of children stated in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration On Monday, October 6, appealed to the people that the specific batch, identified as “injured” by Tamil Nadu officials, appealed to stop the sale or use of cold syrup.

The Maharashtra FDA said in a statement according to the news agency PTI, “The public is urged to be cautious and report any possession of Coldrif Syrup batch number SR -13.”

The agency warned that the batch is suspected to be adulterated with a dyethylene glycol, a chemical that may be toxic for health.

FDA officials are also working towards detecting the distribution of the said Coldrif batch in Maharashtra and have asked the concerned retailers or wholesalers to “freeze” the stock.

The FDA’s statement said, “All drug inspectors and assistant commissioners have been directed to alert retail vendors, wholesalers and hospitals.”

Telangana “alert” public against Coldrif

The Telangana government also started efforts to take sensitive and caution to the people in the state against the use of Coldrif Cuff Syrup.

Director of Telangana Public Health wrote to DM and HOS and directed the officials to raise awareness among people about Coldrif Syrup batch number SR -13, which was found to be toxic.

Instructions said that people should report to the local drug control authority if they were in the possession of Coldrif medicine.

The order urged DM and HOS to implement and broadcast the advice issued by the Directorate General of Health Services of the Union Ministry of Health (DGHS).

The Karnataka government asks officials to maintain vigilance

The Government of Karnataka also directed all the enforcement officers of the state to be vigilant about Coldrif Syrup.

According to PTI, Karnataka’s Food Safety and Drugs Administration, Karnataka’s Food Safety and Drugs Administration said, “All enforcement officers in the state of Karnataka are instructed to be a strict alert on similar combinations from the above drug/batch number and manufacturers.”

“Any stockist, distributor, retailer or government institution was found in possession of these products, if any, testing and analysis should draw samples, and start the necessary action according to the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940,” said this.

“Toxic cold” syrup batch

On 2 October, the Tamil Nadu Drug Control Officers in their report, flagged off adulteration in a batch of syrup and declared samples of cold samples (batch number SR -13, MFG: May 2025; Ex: April 2027), built by Srisan Pharmaceutical, Kanchipuram.

Officials found that these batches contain diathylene glycol (48.6% w/v), a poisonous substance “that can present the harmful material to health.”

Death in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan

At least 14 children have died in Chhindwara district of Madhya Pradesh, while dozens are reported to be in critical condition.

In Rajasthan, at least three children have died due to alleged consumption of syrup.

Action of Union Ministry of Health

Overview of the seriousness of the issue, Union Health Ministry held a high-level meeting on Sunday, October 5With all states and center areas.

The meeting was chaired by the Union Health Secretary Punya Salaila Srivastava to review compliance with drug quality rules and promote rational use of cough syrup, especially in the pediatric population.

The Ministry underlined the need to follow the revised Schedule M to all drug manufacturers and warned that strict action would be taken against the violations.
