The central agency said the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, in a carefully planned operation, seized a total of 36 kilograms of narcotics from a railway passenger at Madurai railway station, and six kilograms of narcotics from the Kodungaiyur dump yard in Chennai.

The seized drugs are worth around Rs 180 crore and the couple has been detained.

The DRI said in a release that methamphetamine, also known as “ice” or “crystal meth,” is a highly addictive psychostimulant drug that exhibits powerful euphoric effects similar to cocaine and its life-threatening consequences. There are consequences.

Acting on a tip-off that a passenger was carrying drugs on the Pothigai Express from Chennai to Madurai on February 29, officials of DRI’s Chennai Zone laid a trap. As soon as the train reached its destination this morning, the team identified the passenger and stopped him with the help of Railway Protection Force (RPF) officials.

During search of his luggage, 15 packets of white colored crystal substance weighing 30 kg were found. Tests revealed it was methamphetamine. The smuggled goods were immediately confiscated.

When interrogated, he revealed that some more methamphetamine packets were kept at his house in Chennai, the release said.

“His house was searched and it was found that his wife had thrown the narcotics packets in the dustbin and the waste was taken to the Kondungaiyur dump yard,” the release said.

A DRI team reached the dump yard and recovered three packets of methamphetamine weighing six kilograms.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the person was carrying contraband for transportation to Sri Lanka through the coastal route. He and his wife have been detained and further investigation is underway.

This is the first major consignment from Madurai, close to the incident where the city police seized over 800 grams of methamphetamine drugs from a house in KK Nagar last week.

Reacting to the seizure, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami said, “It is very shocking and painful that the ruling DMK has turned Tamil Nadu into a state where all kinds of drugs are found.” ganjaCocaine, heroin and now methamphetamine are easily available”.

Instead of stopping the spread of narcotics, which is pushing Tamil Nadu’s future into the grave, the DMK government encouraged drug mafias and gave them access to the party, Mr Palaniswami said in a post on X. – A DMK functionary who allegedly had links with the recently busted international drug cartel was dismissed.

Tamil Nadu opposition leader urged parents to protect their children from the evils of drugs.

BJP state chief K Annamalai also attacked the ruling government and said that Tamil Nadu has become the drug capital of India, and Chief Minister MK Stalin should “shame his head for turning this state into a paradise for drug smugglers.” Should be bowed down from”.

“International drug lord and DMK functionary Jafar Sadiq is absconding. NCB is conducting raids on DMK functionaries’ establishments. Drugs worth Rs 1,200 crore seized off Gujarat coast en route to Tamil Nadu, and today 30 kg of methamphetamine seized en route Madurai by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence,” he said in a post on Twitter.

K Annamalai further said, “While Jafar Sadiq’s extensive network is being exposed, Thiru MK Stalin is maintaining silence, leaving one to wonder whether he will wake up and take action to divert people’s attention or join hands with his comrades.” Will be put to work.”
