Cristiano Ronaldo scored in extra time but Al Nasr were eliminated on penalties by Al Ain in Monday’s Asian Champions League quarter-finals. The 39-year-old Portuguese was the only Al Nasr player to score in a penalty shootout as his Saudi side crashed out 3-1 on penalties and 4-4 on aggregate. It was a frustrating night for the former Manchester United and Real Madrid striker, who missed a shot from three yards out by a wide margin in normal time in Riyadh.

Ronaldo was beaten 1-0 in the first leg in the United Arab Emirates, but in the quarter-finals, Ronaldo kept his cool and took the match into a penalty shootout in the 118th minute.

He coolly converted the penalty to make it 4-3, before the home side sent off Ayman Yahya in the 98th minute.

But the home side failed three of their four attempts in the penalty shootout, sending Al Ain into the semi-finals of Asia’s top club competition.

Brazil international defender Alex Telles (also of Manchester United) was one of the Al Nasr players who committed a foul during the penalty shootout.

In Tuesday’s quarterfinals, Ulsan and Jeonbuk tied 1-1 in an all-Korean match.

The Saudi team Al-Ittihad and Al-Hilal also clashed, with Al-Hilal leading 2-0 in the first leg.

On Wednesday, Harry Kewell’s Yokohama Mariners hosted Chinese team Shandong Taishan, leading 2-1 in the first leg.
