An explosion occurred on the middle deck of a burning ship in the port of los angeles The fire department said electricity and crane operations were disrupted on Friday evening.
Hazardous materials were found in several creeks, and firefighters worked in full protective gear with self-contained breathing apparatus.
By 8.27 a.m., all 23 crew members had been rescued, with no injuries from the electrical fire, which appeared to have started below decks, according to los angeles fire Department. The ship’s cargo includes hazardous materials.
According to the fire department, by around 7 pm the fire had spread to several levels of the ship and later an explosion occurred on the middle deck. It was not immediately clear how the fire started.
“First responders are on scene with more than 100 firefighters battling the blaze and Port Police are working to assist in the safety of the crew,” los angeles mayor karen bass Said in a post on X.
He said the LAFD is monitoring air quality as the fire continues to be contained.
Marine units continue to cool the exterior of the ship, with no personnel allowed below decks, the LAFD said.

The 1,102-foot-long (336 m long) ship, One Henry Hudson, is operated by One Ocean Express, a shipping company headquartered in Singapore.
Before Los Angeles, the ship was recently in Japan, stopping in Kobe, Nagoya and Tokyo. One Ocean Express did not immediately issue a statement.
Live footage from local stations showed a support vessel pouring water over the exterior of the ship as thick, dark smoke billowed from the area where the containers were stacked.
The ship’s management company, Fukujin Kisen, did not immediately provide a statement. Online tracking data from Vessel Finder shows the 2008-built ship recently completed a voyage from Tokyo, the report said new York Times.
