New Delhi/Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 31 (IANS) CPI(M) general secretary MA Baby on Friday described CPI leaders as “close friends and brothers” and said occasional disagreements between the two Left allies are natural and will not affect the unity of the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala.
Baby said the CPI(M) has decided to stop all further action on the PM SHRI issue and hand it over to a subcommittee for detailed investigation.
“The subcommittee will study the issue and bring clarity. No further action will be taken until a final decision is taken,” he said.
He said that his personal intervention in this matter is not unusual.
“I had earlier assured the state leadership that the central leadership will provide all necessary support. It is natural for me to step in if needed,” he said.
The comments come amid recent uneasiness within the LDF after the CPI publicly expressed its objection over the state government’s stance on implementing the Centre’s PM SHRI scheme in Kerala.
However, Baby dismissed speculations of a rift, saying, “Some media outlets tried to show that the front was weakening, but the Kerala leadership acted with maturity and restraint.”
Emphasizing on the unity of the alliance, Baby said the differences within the alliance should be seen in context.
“In some situations, some things may be said, but both sides understand it and take it in the right spirit,” he said.
He also clarified that there is no need to question whether the state leadership has shown any lapse in caution.
“Those who had earlier said that the policy had changed have now clarified their statements,” he said.
Baby said the CPI(M) Politburo has not yet taken up the PM Shri issue for formal discussion, adding that it would be reviewed at that level soon.
Incidentally, CPI, the second largest ally in the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan-led government, was upset when despite his Cabinet members raising the issue, neither Vijayan nor State Education Minister V. Sivankutty addressed their concerns and went ahead by signing the MoU with the Centre.
