Kolkata, Oct 22 (IANS) A Durgapur court on Wednesday rejected the bail plea of four accused in the gang rape of a second-year medical student and sent them to judicial custody. It also ordered a test identification (TI) parade of all the accused on October 24.
Of the six arrested accused, four were produced before the judge on Wednesday afternoon and the judge ordered to send all four accused to judicial custody for five days.
On Tuesday, two other accused in the same case were produced in the court, which rejected their bail pleas and also sent them to judicial custody.
The court has also ordered a TI parade of all the accused on October 24, after which all six accused will be presented in the court after their judicial custody ends on October 27.
On the other hand, the court on Wednesday also examined the WhatsApp chats of the victim and her classmate. Government lawyer Bibhas Chatterjee said, “There is no confusion in this case now. Those who are actually involved will be punished. The court had heard the statements of two people on Tuesday. The plea of the remaining four people was heard today. However, the government has opposed their bail pleas.”
He further said that the victim’s classmate, who was arrested, claimed that he was not involved in the crime in any way. “However, we have given a lot of information to the court. We are hopeful that the case will be decided soon,” Chatterjee said.
Sources said, the police have added several sections against two of the six accused in the case.
Earlier, a case was registered against the six arrested under sections of gang rape, criminal conspiracy, common intention and extortion of money, property or gain by intimidation. According to police sources, apart from those sections, sections of extortion, wrongful confinement and insulting the dignity of a woman have also been added against two of them.
On October 10, a second-year medical student from Odisha was allegedly gang-raped by five men in a forested area outside a private medical college and hospital in Durgapur in West Burdwan district.
Based on the complaint of the victim, the police had earlier arrested all the five accused in this case. Police said that only one person was involved in the physical and sexual assault of the medical student. Later the police arrested the victim’s male friend. The male friend was arrested after investigators found inconsistencies in his answers during questioning.
