Controversy over SP leader’s warning of ‘wrongful’ arrests in Delhi blasts investigation; BJP targeted

New Delhi, Nov 12 (IANS) Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Abu Azmi on Wednesday sparked a major political controversy by drawing parallels between the Delhi blasts investigation and the 2006 Mumbai train blasts case and urged the government to avoid making any false arrests to hide its failure.

Speaking to media persons, the SP leader demanded that the culprits behind the deadly Delhi blasts should be punished and hanged within six months, but the Center should not make ‘random and wrongful’ arrests to cover up the security lapse that led to such bombings in the national capital.

The BJP immediately reacted to Abu Azmi’s claims, accusing the SP leader of defending terrorists by taking his side.

BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari said SP leaders are supporting Omar, Muzammil, Shaheen – the three accused who are under investigation for terror links to the Delhi blasts.

“This is the same Samajwadi Party which once demanded withdrawal of cases against terrorists,” he said, adding that soon the ‘ecosystem’ would come forward to defend and justify their claims.

Earlier, speaking to reporters, Abu Azmi hit out at the Maharashtra government over the zero conviction in the 2006 Mumbai train blasts and said innocents should not be targeted in the investigation into the Delhi blasts.

“Putting anyone behind bars on the basis of suspicion is a huge injustice to innocent people and shows the incompetence and ineptitude of the authorities,” he said.

Demanding speedy justice in the Delhi blasts investigation, he said, “They should be tried and hanged within six months, but innocents should not be arrested. In the Mumbai train blasts, which resulted in 187 deaths, there have been zero convictions and no one has been convicted. The police arrested some suspects and kept them in jail for 19 years but the High Court found them not guilty. The case against the accused, who are in jail, was not sustained and So he was released.”

Abu Azmi’s comments come just after Union Home Minister Amit Shah gave clear instructions to the investigating agencies to ‘hunt down’ all those involved in the blasts.

The BJP has reacted strongly to Abu Azmi’s claims and accused him of ‘standing’ with terror criminals.

BJP leader Rajiv Chandrashekhar, seeing the motive in Abu Azmi’s comment, said that a terrorist incident took place in Delhi, but some parties continuously promote radical elements and this promotes extremism and fundamentalism in the country.
