New Delhi, 6 October (IANS) Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, and Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) President Sonia Gandhi on Monday strongly condemned the attempt to attack India’s Chief Justice (CJI) Bra Gavai inside the Supreme Court.
In her statement, Sonia Gandhi said that no word was enough to condemn the incident.
“Any word is not enough to condemn the attack on the Honorable Chief Justice of India in the Supreme Court. It is an attack not only on it, but also our Constitution,” he said.
The statement said, “Chief Justice Gavai has been very kind, but the nation should stand in solidarity in solidarity.”
Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi also called the attempt to attack CJI as a “attack on the spirit of the Constitution”.
“The attack on the Chief Justice of India is an attack on the dignity of our judiciary and the spirit of our constitution,” he wrote on X.
He said that such hatred has no place in India and such incidents should be condemned.
Political leaders in the spectrum condemned the attempt of a lawyer to throw a shoe on the bench led by CJI Gawai. Security personnel immediately intervened and dropped him out of court.
While taking away, the lawyer was heard raising slogans referring to Sanatan Dharma. The incident allegedly came in response to CJI Gavai’s comment in the Khajuraho Vishnu Murti Restoration case.
Later, CJI Gawai emphasized respect for all religions and issued clarifications between distortions on social media.
“Somebody told me the other day that the comments made by me have been depicted on social media in a certain way. I respect all religions,” the CJI Gawai clarified on 18 September.
Meanwhile, the Bar Council of India (BCI) has suspended lawyer Rakesh Kishore with immediate effect as his conduct was incomplete with his rules on professional conduct and etiquette standards and court dignity.
The BCI asked the Delhi Bar Council to ensure immediate compliance of its interim order by updating its position on its role and informing all the courts and tribunals within its jurisdiction.
In a similar vein, the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has expressed “deep shock, outrage and uneven condemnation” on the incident and said that it is considering proper disciplinary action against a temporary member advocate Kishore.
Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court Advocate-on-Cord Association (SCOARA) urged the apex court to take the cognizance of the incident and initiate proper contempt proceedings.
