In September, Rizwan Qadri, a member of the Prime Ministers Museum and Library (PMML) Society, had said that he had written to Congress leader Sonia Gandhi to allow physical or digital access to the personal papers related to former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, which are held by him.
Sharing the government’s reply in the Lok Sabha, Congress general secretary in-charge of communications Jairam Ramesh said, “Finally the truth came out in the Lok Sabha yesterday. Will anyone apologise?” The government informed Parliament on Monday, December 15, that no documents related to the first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru were found missing from the PMML during the annual inspection this year.
Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said this in a written reply to a question by BJP MP Sambit Patra in the Lok Sabha.
The minister was asked whether PMML “has made any policy” to conduct an annual audit of the documents available in the museum. “No, there is no annual audit of documents in the Prime Minister Museum and Library,” Shekhawat said.
It was also asked whether “certain documents relating to the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru were found missing” from the museum during the annual inspection in 2025.
“No document related to the first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, has been found missing from the museum during the annual inspection of PMML in the year 2025,” the reply said.
Asked whether the said documents were “improperly and illegally removed” from the museum, Shekhawat said, “The question does not arise.” The Union Minister further said at the PMML Annual General Meeting in 2025 that ‘no decision was taken regarding the unavailability of documents related to the first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.’
PMML is housed in Teen Murti Bhawan, which also hosts the Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya.
After Nehru’s death, Teen Murti Bhavan in central Delhi was converted into the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML), which housed a rich collection of books and rare records. Its name was changed to PMML Society in 2023.
PMML Society is the principal decision-making body of PMML, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi as its Chairman and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh as its Vice-Chairman.
