Congress leader’s Instagram post on Kangana Ranaut sparks controversy

New Delhi:

A Congress leader’s derogatory post on actor Kangana Ranaut’s campaign debut has sparked fresh controversy, with the National Commission for Women demanding action against the politician.

The post with Ms Ranaut’s photo on Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate’s Instagram account was posted weeks before the national elections. Ms. Ranaut is contesting the election on a BJP ticket from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh.

The “Queen” actor responded to Ms Shrinath’s comments on social media, noting that she has played different female characters “from a prostitute in Rajjo to a revolutionary leader in Thalevi”.

“We must free our daughters from the shackles of prejudice, we must move beyond curiosity about their body parts, and most importantly, we must avoid viewing the challenging lives or circumstances of sex workers as some form of abuse or denigration… … Every woman deserves to be treated with respect for her dignity,” she said.

Ms Shrinate posted a video to clarify and said she had deleted “inappropriate posts” that had been posted on her account without her knowledge.

“A lot of people have access to my Facebook and Instagram accounts. One of them posted an extremely inappropriate post today. I deleted it as soon as I found out. Everyone who knows me knows that I can never It’s personal.’ and inappropriate comments about any woman,” she said.

She blamed a parody account run under her name for causing “offensive posts.” “Someone copied it from there and posted it on my Instagram and Facebook accounts. I’m trying to find out from someone with access who did this. I also reported the parody account to Twitter,” Ms. Shrinate added.

Ms. Ranaut also shared a screenshot of a conversation in which a Congress leader from Gujarat made vicious remarks about her maiden election.

“If a young man gets a ticket, his ideology is attacked, if a young woman gets a ticket, her sexuality is attacked. Bizarre! And a congressman is gendering a town’s name. But the clarification did not dampen the attack on the Congress by the BJP led by Union Minister Smriti Irani.
