Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 17 (IANS) Hours after the Congress announced a new committee for its Kerala unit with 13 vice-presidents and 58 general secretaries, dissenting voices emerged on Friday, with the state chief dismissing the party as ‘jumbo’.
Six additional members were also added to the Political Affairs Committee as part of the reorganization.
Criticism came from those who were excluded and from those whose close associates failed to make it to the revised committee.
But a smiling KPCC president Sunny Joseph dismissed the criticism, saying, “Look, the Congress party is jumbo and hence it is natural that when the reforms take place it will be reflected. Moreover, the reforms are not over yet as the list of secretaries will be out soon.”
Incidentally, over the years, the party in Kerala has been divided under different factions of leaders. The first leader to express his displeasure over the latest reform was K. Karunakaran’s son, former party president K. Muraleedharan, as his close aides failed to make the list.
After the list was released, women’s leader Shama Mohammed, with a sarcastic post on social media, questioned whether “merit” was a criterion for appointments.
Supporters of Chandy Oommen, son of two-time former chief minister Oommen Chandy, are also unhappy with him not getting the post, but Joseph said, “Chandi Oommen is a promising leader.” His father, Chandy, often said that even though he held several top positions during his long innings in the party, he never held any major position in the party organisation.
Joseph is hopeful that when the next list comes, he will be able to quell the current wave of unrest as no one in the party wants unrest to erupt as two important elections are approaching.
