A few weeks into the new year, many Americans will be enjoying a long weekend due to federal holiday schedules.

This year Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday, January 19th. The annual holiday, held on the third Monday of January, coincides with the civil rights leader’s birthday, January 15.

However, a federal holiday does not guarantee that all workers in the United States will have the day off.

It is up to individual employers to decide whether to provide furlough or additional pay Federal holidays.
