Nearly a hundred schools are closed in northern Scotland as snow causes further disruption across the region. 57 schools were closed in Wales, while 41 schools were closed in England.
Much of northern Scotland is under a yellow warning, which started on Tuesday and is due to end on Friday. Similar warnings apply for much of north-east England and Yorkshire, as well as western coastal areas of Wales, from 12am onwards.
The Met Office said there was widespread wintry rain across the UK, particularly on higher ground, with snowfall reported in areas including Scotland, Northumberland, Humberside, Powys in Wales, Cornwall and Northern Ireland.
A yellow weather warning for snow and ice has also been issued for parts of south-west Wales and south-west England from Wednesday afternoon until 11.59pm Thursday.
The Met Office said: “It will be a cold start with snowy patches in places. It will be a cold but bright day for most, although sunshine is gradually fading. Dense cloud and bursts of rain will move into the north-west later. It is feeling pleasant in light winds.”

The Met Office has warned that the “first notable cold snap this autumn” could lead to “particularly difficult travel conditions” as well as power cuts.
Looking ahead to the weekend, the forecaster said: “As we head into the weekend, we expect a change to milder, more unsettled, Atlantic-driven weather. This will bring occasional clouds, rain and some strong winds, but will also reduce the winter threats we have seen in recent days.
“We are keeping an eye on Wales and the Midlands, where saturated ground conditions could increase the chance of a lesser impact.”
For Sunday and Monday, the forecast says: “Rain and showers will continue on Sunday and Monday. There will be a few heavy spells in between, more so on Tuesday. Less cold, especially at night and often windy.”
