Nearly a hundred schools are closed in northern Scotland as snow causes further disruption across the region.
Much of northern Scotland was under a yellow warning for snow and ice from 6pm on Tuesday until 9pm on Thursday. The same will apply from 12am on Wednesday to 11.59am on Thursday in much of north-east England and Yorkshire, as well as from midnight to 12am on Wednesday in Northern Ireland.
A yellow weather warning for snow and ice has also been issued for parts of south-west Wales and south-west England from Wednesday afternoon until 11.59pm Thursday.
The Met Office said: “Today will be a sunny day for most, but there will be sleet and snow along the coast.” He said there will be particularly strong winds and gusty winds across north-east England.
The weather will remain cold throughout, with “widespread frost improving overnight as winds begin to subside,” according to the National Forecast Service.
He said “rainfall will reduce in the west and some will continue in the east” on Thursday night. Otherwise, it will be “dry with clear weather and winds slowing, leading to widespread frost by morning.”
Some vehicles and passengers were likely stranded with power cuts and travel delays on the roads.
Repeated winters will nourish the area inland from the North Sea, leading to significant snow accumulations in parts of the North York Moors and Yorkshire Wolds. By the end of Thursday, up to 15-25 cm of accumulation may occur on hills higher than 100 metres.

The Met Office has warned that the “first notable cold snap this autumn” could lead to “particularly difficult travel conditions” as well as power cuts.
The forecast for Friday looks like it will be a “cold start” followed by “mostly sunny skies and a cold front.” Later, clouds and rain will come from the north-west, where winds will be strong and slightly slow.
The weekend outlook is calling for rain and clouds from the west on Saturday. According to the Met Office, the cold will ease but there will be rain or showers on Sunday and Monday as well as some bright sunshine.
