President Donald Trump signed an executive order mandating that federal employees be excused from duty on Christmas Eve, which is a Wednesday this year, and Dec. 26, the day after Christmas.
The move, which the president noted leaves agency heads at their discretion if they believe certain offices should remain open, means federal employees will get three consecutive days off, including Christmas Day, and even more if they don’t need to work over the weekend.
This brings the total number of federal holidays to 13 in 2025.
Trump declared Christmas Eve a federal holiday during his first term in office in 2019 and 2020. Former President Barack Obama had done the same for December 26.
Congress must pass legislation establishing a permanent federal holiday and the President must sign it into law.

However, the federal holiday does not guarantee that all workers across the US will get the day off. It is up to individual employers whether they offer time off or extra pay for work. Federal Holidays.
