“Communal Violence, Terrorism”: Strict American Travel Advisor for Bangladesh

The United States has released a strict Travel advice For Bangladesh, in the Asian country, giving flags to terrorism and civic unrest, which saw a deadly coup and a change in governance less than a year ago. American citizens should reconsider the visit to Bangladesh due to civil unrest, crime and terrorism, said the advisor of the state department issued on Friday.

Bangladesh currently has a ‘Level 3’ tag, urging American citizens to reconsider their visit, while some pockets – Khagrachi, Rangmati, and Bandarban Hill Tracts Districts – come with a level 4 “do not travel” warning.

The above districts are collectively known as Chittagong Hill Tract. The US advisor stated that passengers should not visit the region “due to communal violence, crime, terrorism, kidnapping and other security risks,” said the US advisor.

“The region has been abducted, which are inspired by domestic or family disputes, and who target members of religious minorities. The separatist organizations and political violence also create additional threats for visitors for the region, and IEDs are examples of explosions and active shoots,” this is said.

Bangladesh saw a big student protest last year, which ended with former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s East in August. More than a thousand protesters died, followed by attacks on Hindu religious minorities and Hindu monks.

A new interim government headed by Nobel Prize winner Muhammad Yunus is now waiting to elect the next Bangladesh leader. However, the US fears that the situation is still not peaceful for its citizens to travel.

“Over -over -protests continue with the capacity for violent clashes … American citizens are reminded to avoid all meetings, even peaceful people, as they can be very rarely or without warnings … There is a risk of terrorist violence, including terrorist attacks and other activities in Bangladesh,” the adviser said.

The US government has also banned the non-necessary visit of federal employees outside the diplomatic enclave in Dhaka and should receive a special authority to travel outside the Bangladesh capital.

Other people traveling to Bangladesh should avoid political ceremonies and demonstrations and monitor local media to break the events, the US government has advised.
