In its weather bulletin, the IMD warned that fog will remain a major concern during nights and mornings from December 26, affecting visibility and daily life in many states.
According to IMD, very dense fog is likely to persist over Bihar till December 26, Assam and Meghalaya till December 27, Uttar Pradesh till December 29 and Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh till December 30.
Dense fog is also expected in different parts of Jammu and Kashmir, East Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Odisha, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura in the coming days.
Cold wave and cold day alert
The IMD has predicted cold wave conditions over parts of Jharkhand on December 26 and 27, over West Rajasthan and North Chhattisgarh from December 26 to 28, and over Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh between December 26 and 30.

Cold day to severe cold day conditions are likely at isolated places over Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim from 26 to 28 December, with isolated parts of Uttarakhand also likely to be affected.
Minimum temperatures have dropped rapidly in many areas. The IMD said temperatures dropped below 5 degrees Celsius at many places in Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh and adjoining areas, while minimum temperatures were recorded between 5 and 10 degrees Celsius in parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.
According to the weather agency, Adampur in Punjab recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 3 degrees Celsius in the plains.
Weather systems are driving conditions
According to the IMD, several weather systems are influencing the current conditions, including the cyclonic circulation of upper air over the south-east Arabian Sea and south-west Bay of Bengal.
The subtropical westerly jet stream, with peak winds of about 140 knots, dominates Northeast India. A fresh, weak western disturbance is also expected to affect the western Himalayan region from December 27.
Under these systems, scattered light to moderate rainfall or snowfall is likely over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand between December 26 and 31. Andaman and Nicobar Islands are expected to receive thunderstorms along with strong winds during the same period.
Delhi NCR weather forecast
For Delhi and National Capital Region, the IMD has predicted light to moderate fog in the morning hours from December 26 to 28.
By December 28, the maximum temperature is expected to remain between 20-23 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature may drop to 5-9 degrees Celsius. Winds are likely to be light, mainly from west to north-west.
