Chennai, 23 September (IANS) The innovative rainwater reuse model of Coimbatore Corporation, the city is pioneer as a pioneer, as a pioneer in sustainable water management in Tamil Nadu.
Unlike most government buildings across the state, which have mainly adopted rainwater harvesting (RWH) for groundwater recharge, the corporation introduced a system to direct and re-use rainwater directly for non-union purposes at its Town Hall Headquarters at its Town Hall Headquarters.
The specially built tank for this purpose was filled with rain in September, demonstrating the effectiveness of the model.
After this success, the corporation is preparing to expand the initiative in all five zonal offices, with the aim of reducing the dependence on borewell water and promoting sustainable practices in urban areas.
The system is designed to cut rainwater from an area of about 25,000 square feet through 40 collection points.
The capacity of the tank is 1.08 million liters, supported by a European filtration mechanism, and can provide water for about 10 weeks.
An additional ground level tank with a capacity of one lakh liters is also planned to further strengthen the storage capacity of the system.
The model includes a filtration system with a removable dirt collecting basket, which ensures easy maintenance and long -term efficiency.
Stored rainwater is used for daily non-penetable needs, which is more than 8,000 liters. To maintain balance, excess water from the tank is diverted into a groundwater recharge system next to the borewell. This ensures optimal use of natural resources, reducing the dual approach, rearning of rainwater and recharge of groundwater, reducing wastage.
The system also addresses the challenges often seen during the monsoon, when the surplus water leads to floods or closes in storm water channels.
By demonstrating the practicality of re -use of rainwater with recharge, Coimbatore has set a benchmark in water management.
If it is repeated in other cities, this model has the ability to change how the urban centers in Tamil Nadu are conserved and used to the urban centers, especially during the monsoon season.
