Coco Gough She took to social media to clarify her recent comments to American tennis fans overseas.

The world number four made the comments during a press conference at the Fed Cup, where she kicks off her 2026 season this week.

She said U.S. fans overseas were the “worst” when it came to supporting their own players at tennis tournaments outside the U.S., while fans from smaller countries cheered louder for their players on foreign soil.

“I feel like we’re the absolute worst in the tennis department,” she said.

Gauff, who lost 6-1, 6-7 (3), 6-0 to world number 42 Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in her first match in Perth, clarified her comments before taking the court.

She wrote on

“People from smaller countries come with their colors and flags and know exactly who they support.

“I’m just speaking from my perspective. I understand the financial side of things and I know tennis isn’t accessible to everyone, it’s more a comment on those who are already participating and how I hope they are as passionate as the people from other countries.”

The 21-year-old also added that she gave her initial thoughts in response to a question posed at the press conference: “I was asked and this is just an observation I’ve noticed about other countries versus my country and that’s it. Still, I appreciate any support, no matter how big or small.”

The United States defeated Spain and Argentina to advance to the quarterfinals, and Gauff recovered from a singles loss to win the mixed doubles match against Christian Harrison 7-6(5), 6-0. After winning, the two also signed autographs and took photos with fans.

At a subsequent press conference, Gough was asked if the reaction to her comments had made her reluctant to go to court.

“No,” she said. “And I don’t think it was stacked. I just wanted to clarify what I meant. I wrote everything I had to say.”
