New Delhi, Nov 1 (IANS) Coal India’s production has increased nearly 10 times in five decades to 702 million tonnes (MT) – from 79 MT in the year of inception in 1975 to 781 MT by the end of FY 2025, an official statement said on Saturday.

Similarly, the supply of coal increased from 685 MT to 78 MT to 763 MT during the period under reference.

Coal India Limited (CIL), a Maharatna Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Coal, is marking an important milestone by completing 50 years of its establishment.

Established on November 1, 1975, CIL was formed as the apex holding company of nationalized coking coal mines (1971) and non-coking coal mines (1973).

With a dedicated workforce of over 2.2 lakh employees, CIL remains one of the largest corporate employers in the country.

Notably, the pace of production and off-take was the fastest during the last decade, with production increasing from 494 MT during FY 2014-15 to 781 MT in 2024-25, a higher trajectory jump of 287 MT.

This is close to 41 per cent of the total growth of 702 MT achieved by CIL in five decades.

The decadal growth in coal offtake was also as high as 40%, with the volume increasing by 274 MT from 489 MT in FY 2014-15 to 763 MT in FY 2024-25.

A senior CIL official said, “For any company to lead the country’s energy sector for 50 consecutive years, accounting for 75 per cent of the country’s total coal production, is a remarkable achievement.” This highlights the growing commitment of CIL and the encouragement of the Coal Ministry to take coal production to higher levels.

Apart from its core competency, CIL is also taking major steps in diversification initiatives like setting up 3000 MW solar power plants by FY 2028 in the first phase, critical mineral acquisition, coal gasification etc.
