Chennai, Oct 30 (IANS) Chief Minister MK Stalin will on Thursday pay state tribute to freedom fighter and national leader Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar on the occasion of his 118th birth anniversary and Guru Puja day.
The Chief Minister, along with ministers, Members of Parliament and MLAs, will pay floral tributes at the leader’s memorial at Pasampon in Kamudi taluk of Ramanathapuram district today. Along with this, ministers, MPs, MLAs and representatives of local bodies in Chennai will pay homage by garlanding the statue of Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar at Nandanam Junction on Anna Salai.
Born to Ukkirapandi Thevar and Indrani Ammal on October 30, 1908 in Pasumpon village, Muthuramalinga Thevar emerged as a towering figure in the socio-political and spiritual sphere of Tamil Nadu.
From a young age, he opposed colonial domination and supported values such as spirituality, nationalism, anti-imperialism, anti-communism and abolition of caste discrimination.
His life was an inspiring mix of devotion, discipline and unwavering patriotism. Thevar died on October 30, 1963, but is revered among the Tamil people as a symbol of courage, faith and unity.
In 2007, during the tenure of former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, the Government of Tamil Nadu celebrated Thevar’s centenary grandly.
Thevar’s ancestral home at Pasumpon was renovated, and several public facilities were established to honor his legacy, including a centenary gateway, a photo exhibition hall, an eternal flame, a new library building, a ‘Mulai Paari’ hall and a ‘Mudikkanai’ hall.
In recognition of his contributions, three government colleges at Nallur (Tirunelveli district), Kamuthi (Ramanathapuram district) and Usilampatti (Madurai district) were named after him.
The tallest statue of Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar was also built in Madurai.
Continuing this legacy of honour, Chief Minister MK Stalin, on behalf of the Government of Tamil Nadu, inaugurated the Pasampone Muthuramalinga Thevar Memorial Auditorium (Thevar Arangam) at the Pasampone Memorial site on October 28, 2024.
The annual Guru Puja and birth anniversary celebrations commemorate Thevar’s enduring influence on the political and cultural history of Tamil Nadu, a legacy rooted in justice, equality and spiritual nationalism.
