CM Stalin to unveil 25-year-old mobility scheme, QR-based ticketing for Chennai

Chennai, 20 September (IANS) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin will unveil the 25-year Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) for the Chennai metropolitan area next week, as well as the launch of a single QR-cod-based ticketing system as well as all major modes of public transport in the city.

According to an official release, announcements will be made during the second governing board meeting of Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (Cumta) at the State Secretariat.

The CMP covers 5,904 sq km, gives a roadmap by 2048, aimed at describing authorities as “integrated, easy, safe and durable transport ecosystem” to Chennai.

The scheme tries to enhance public transport share, ensure cheap fare, to fully integrate the services and reduce emissions through non-motor-friendly dynamics options.

With this long -term plan, CM Stalin will also introduce Chennai One Mobility App, which is available on iOS and Android platforms.

The app allows passengers to plan travel, track services in real time and buy digital tickets using UPI or card payments.

Its major feature, ‘One City, Forest Ticket’, will enable passengers to switch between buses, metro trains and suburban rails using single QR code – the first such feature in any Indian city.

Officials said that the app available in Tamil, English, Telugu and Hindi is expected to cut the queue at ticket counters and transfer between various transport modes.

“With only a few taps, passengers can plan, pay and travel – a historical improvement for public transport of Chennai.”

Transport planners believe that the CMP combined with integrated ticketing system can become a template for other metros to integrate services and improve commuter experience.
