Chennai, Nov 10 (IANS) Chief Minister MK Stalin will inaugurate 25 Ambu Cholai – senior citizen recreation and resource centers – in Tiruchirappalli district on Monday.
The initiative, set up at an estimated cost of Rs 10 crore, is part of the Tamil Nadu government’s efforts to enhance the quality of life and social engagement of elderly citizens.
Aimed at promoting physical, mental and emotional well-being among senior citizens, Ambu Cholai Centers function as day-care facilities that provide opportunities for companionship, recreation and community participation.
Each center has been designed with adequate space, amenities and accessibility features to assist elderly users. Activities like reading, yoga, cultural interactions, indoor games and counseling will be facilitated by trained personnel.
According to officials, the project stems from Chief Minister Stalin’s directive to create an inclusive and supportive environment for the elderly, especially those living alone or away from families.
The centers will operate during day time and will offer nutritious refreshments, health monitoring and wellness programs in collaboration with social welfare and health departments.
Before the inauguration ceremony, the Chief Minister is scheduled to attend a private function at the residence of Srirangam MLA Palaniandhi. Later, he will visit Pudukkottai district to lay the foundation stone of various developmental projects worth Rs 767 crore. The event will be held at Mookambigai College of Engineering, Keeranur, where CM Stalin will also inaugurate completed projects, distribute welfare assistance to the beneficiaries and deliver a special address.
The Ambu Cholai initiative represents an important step in the government’s broader agenda of ensuring the well-being and dignity of senior citizens through community-based support. After completing his programs in Tiruchi and Pudukkottai, the Chief Minister is expected to return to Chennai in the evening.
Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin will inaugurate a unique wellness initiative – “Special Temple Seva Scheme” – for senior couples aged 70 years and above at the historic Arulmigu Sri Parthasarathyswami Temple in Triplicane on Monday.
