Chennai, 5 October (IANS) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Sunday inspected the major floods and infrastructure works in the Alwarpet region of Chennai, urged the authorities to the fast-track projects and ensured that the city is ready for the upcoming North East Monsoon.
According to a government statement, Stalin visited TTK Road, where Greater Chennai Corporation is constructing a new storm water drain network, while Chennai Metro water is laying underground pipelines simultaneously.
The Chief Minister investigated the progress of coordinated work and directed that projects should be completed to avoid waterlogging during heavy rains.
He then moved to the Venus Colony, where the construction of a storm water drain is going on at an estimated cost of Rs 8.21 crore for a total stretch of 2.16 km.
The statement said that these drains are designed to prevent chronic floods in lower level residential roads.
“Venus Colony First and Second Streets have water stoppage, Mr. Srinivasan Street, Varadarajapuram Main Road, Kasturi Estate First Street, Shakhadari Street and Maraz Gate Road.
Officials said that rainwater has also been provided new arrangements for the channel which can stabilize due to construction activities using alternative drainage routes through Aldams Road, CP Ramasamy Road, Luz Church Road and SIT Colony Road.
The purpose of these measures is to ensure that residents do not face disruption during the final stages of work.
Stalin directed Civic and Metro Water officials to accelerate construction and kept precautionary security measures before the arrival of the Northeast Monsoon.
He stressed that it is important for the timely completion between the departments and the proper coordination of the flood-prone neighborhood.
State Health Minister Ma Subramanian, Chepuk -Thiruvallicaini MLA Ezilan, Senior Officer of Greater Chennai Corporation, and Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board, and local engineers were present during inspection.
With this review, the state government focused a renewed focus on the city’s flood flexibility, it is expected to come a few days before the huge seasonal rains begin.
