Hyderabad, November 20 (IANS) Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Thursday suggested the Center to implement Telangana’s free fine rice distribution scheme across the country. The Chief Minister made this suggestion during a meeting with Union Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Minister Pralhad Joshi here.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy explained to the Union Minister that Telangana is the only state in the country which is implementing free distribution of fine rice through fair price shops.
According to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), Chief Minister Reddy told the Union Minister that the objective of the welfare scheme will be fulfilled only when people are provided with the rice they eat.
The Chief Minister suggested that the Center consider free distribution of ‘Sanna Biyayam’ (fine rice) to consumers across the country on the same lines as it is being implemented in Telangana. He requested that if necessary, a comprehensive study should be conducted and appropriate decision should be taken in this regard.
Joshi told Reddy that a decision on distribution of fine rice would be taken after a full-scale study.
Telangana Civil Supplies Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy, Chief Secretary Ramakrishna Rao, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Shri Seshadri, Principal Secretary of Civil Supplies Department Stephen Ravindra and other senior officials were present.
Under the scheme launched in March this year under CM Reddy, the Telangana government is supplying fine rice to the poor free of cost through fair price shops. Every ration card holder in the state gets six kilograms of good rice every month.
The Telangana government says that 3.10 crore people are benefiting from this scheme, which is about 85 percent of the state’s population.
