Kolkata, Oct 30 (IANS) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of trying to link every suicide incident in the state with the Special Intensification Amendment (SIR) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
In his official NRC and SIR.
In his social media post, BJP leader Malviya had asked why the 95-year-old man, born in 1930 and Indian by birth, took his life due to SIR.
The BJP leader said, “Even if, by any logic, he was not an Indian citizen after Partition and came to India later, he, being a Hindu, was automatically eligible for Indian citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). The truth is that it is not the SIR but the corrupt and collapsing administration of Mamata Banerjee whose hands are stained with blood.”
According to the BJP leader, the mystery has deepened as the place of Majumdar’s suicide was Ilambazar in Birbhum district.
“The man lived in Ilambazar, a Trinamool Congress stronghold where harassment by local leaders is rampant,” Malviya said.
He also hinted that Trinamool Congress cadres may brainwash Majumdar with fear and misinformation or prevent him from applying for his rightful citizenship under the CAA, noting that the state’s ruling party had earlier announced that the CAA would never be implemented in West Bengal.
“If Mamata Banerjee insists on weaving stories to stoke fear and stop SIR, she should at least rationalize them. Her current script is nothing but a desperate, hollow fraud – written for electoral gains and aimed at insulting Bengal’s intelligence and the soul of democracy.”
Earlier on Thursday, after information about Majumdar’s suicide came to light, Chief Minister Banerjee had issued a social media post, in which she had claimed that the continuous suicides and suicide attempts in West Bengal over the last few days due to fear of SIR and possible NRC are an example of the tragic consequences of the BJP’s politics of fear, division and hatred.
Malviya had claimed that if the BJP comes to power in West Bengal after the 2026 assembly elections, then ensure an impartial investigation into all such suicides and bring to justice every miscreant associated with the current ruling party in the state.
