traitorShowrunner Claudia Winkleman said the show’s winners Rachel and Stephen were like “Bonnie and Clyde.”

The pair became the first Renegade pair to win the British series in Friday night’s tense final.

Communications director Rachel, originally from Newry in Northern Ireland, and cybersecurity consultant Stephen, who hails from the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides but now lives in London, were cast as traitors by Winkleman from the start of the series.

They remained loyal to each other while cheating the other players until the end, splitting the prize and each walking away with £47,875.

In the spinoff Renegade: Unmasked, Winkelmann praised their alliance, saying: “I found their ending and their love for each other incredibly moving.

“What I love about Rachel and Stephen is that, from the beginning, they look out for each other without making it obvious.

“They formed an alliance.

“We’ve never seen this before. A lot of people form alliances and they’ll last an episode or five minutes, but they decide, not Romeo and Juliet, because it ends badly, but Bonnie and Clyde.

“They were lovers in a turret and they stuck together.”

In the series finale, Jade, Faraz and James voted out the remaining loyal fans in a tense finale.

After winning the show, Winkelmann told the players: “Two traitors, but completely loyal to each other. You did it. You absolutely did it.”

At the beginning of the series, the two made a pact to never write each other’s names down during the roundtable, and they stuck to their word until the end.
