Chennai, Nov 19 (IANS) In a shocking incident that has sparked widespread outrage, a Class 12 girl from Rameshwaram was brutally stabbed to death by a 21-year-old youth on Wednesday after she repeatedly rejected his repeated demands to enter into a romantic relationship.
The accused named Muniyaraj has been arrested by the police.
The victim, Shalini, who was a Class 12 student of Rameshwaram Government Girls Higher Secondary School, lived with her family at Cherankottai near Rameshwaram in Ramanathapuram district. His father, Mariyappan, earns his livelihood as a fisherman and is the father of two daughters, of whom Shalini was the elder.
According to police sources, Muniyaraj – who lived in the same area – had been harassing the girl for several days, pressurizing her to accept his love proposal.
Fed up with his repeated actions, Shalini informed her father about the harassment. Angry and worried for his daughter’s safety, Mariyappan confronts the young man at his home and warns him to stop harassing him. However, it appears that this interference further angered the accused.
On the day of the incident, when Shalini was going to school, an angry Muniyaraj allegedly confronted her and stabbed her several times with a knife.
The attack was so gruesome that the girl died on the spot before help could reach her.
Residents who witnessed the horrific scene immediately informed the Port Police Station. Police personnel reached the spot, recovered the girl’s body and sent it to the government hospital for post-mortem.
A special team launched a search for the accused, who fled the area after committing the crime. He was later arrested and taken into custody for questioning.
The gruesome murder has shocked the entire area, especially parents of school-going children, and has reignited concerns over the safety of girls in the area.
A large crowd gathered outside the hospital and police station demanding quick and strict action against the accused.
Police officials have assured that a detailed investigation is underway and the accused will be punished strictly under the law.
The senseless murder of the young student has saddened and angered the community, raising demands for stronger measures to prevent crimes against women and children.
