Kolkata: A clash broke out between Border Security Force (BSF) personnel and police in West Bengal’s Nadia district over possession of seized Phensedyl (a banned cough syrup).
Police said on Wednesday that the incident took place in Chhapra police station area of Krishnanagar police district at around 9 pm on Tuesday night.
At least three policemen were injured in the clash between central and state forces. After bringing the situation under control, the police arrested a BSF jawan for his involvement in the clash. However, no official statement has come from the BSF DIG, South Bengal Frontier or the Superintendent of Krishnanagar Police District regarding the incident.
According to police sources, some packets were being unloaded from a car on Krishnanagar-Karimpur state highway near Seemanagar area of Chhapra police station last evening.
When local residents opened the packets, they found a large quantity of banned cough syrup ‘Phensadyl’ in them. The local people immediately informed the Chapra police station about the matter.
Officers from Chhapra police station immediately reached the spot. He confiscated the banned cough syrup and took it in his car. At the same time BSF jawans of Seemanagar 32 battalion reached the spot. BSF wanted to take possession of the seized banned cough syrup. But the police refused to hand them over citing rules. This led to an argument between both the parties. After this a fight started between them. More policemen and a BSF team reached the spot to control the situation.
A police source said that three policemen were injured in the clash. He was immediately rescued and taken to Chhapra Hospital for treatment.
Sources said that one of the three injured policemen is seriously injured. After the clash, the police took a BSF jawan into custody. On receiving the information, senior BSF officials reached the spot. On the other hand, Additional Superintendent of Police and DSP of Krishnanagar police district also reached the spot. Sources said that currently discussions are going on between the two sides.
BSF sources claimed that they had received information from special sources that banned cough syrup was being brought to Chhapra police station border in a vehicle. When they went to seize them, the state police stopped them. On the other hand, the police allege that after seizing ‘Phensidil’ following the prescribed legal procedure, the BSF jawans wanted to take it into their custody. The fight began when he refused to hand them over for legal reasons.
