When prestige TV was first thought about eclipsing movies with quality scripts and meaty acting roles, two shows that aired frequently were “Homeland”. claire danes and this AmericanS” starring Matthew Rice And keri russell,
Danes acknowledges other similarities with Rhys.
“I mean, you married an American lady, I married a British gentleman,” she said, referring to her marriage to Hugh Dancy and Rice’s partner, Russell.
“We’re just mirroring each other’s lives,” Rice said, noting that they had children around the same time.
Danes and Rice had never worked together before. They co-star in the new cat-and-mouse limited series, “The Beast in Me,” streaming on Netflix.
Danes plays Aggie, a prickly Pulitzer Prize-winning author with a looming deadline for her second book and a major case of writer’s block. She is also grieving the death of her young son and the breakup of her marriage soon after. When rice IndigoA real estate tycoon lives next door, his reputation precedes him as he was a suspect in his ex-wife’s disappearance. Neil’s aggressive dog and loud security alarm irritate Aggie. He and his new wife try to charm the neighbors but she is a tough nut to crack and returns his gifted bottle of wine.
“You’re not at all like I painted you… at all,” Niles says to Aggie in their initial encounter. “On the page you’re so confident.” Somehow he woos Aggie to lunch and the ice between them begins to melt.
Danes said, “I think they’re both very smart and rarely do they encounter someone who thinks as fast as they do. They’re kind of hyper-perceptive. And they enjoy challenging each other.”
Although she doesn’t completely trust Neil, Aggie proposes that he write a book about him to get his story out.
“He says, ‘Wait, I can erase this kind of social stain that I’m living with, and I can possibly erase my name,'” Rice said. “He foolishly thinks he can use Aggie in that sense.”
“The Beast in Me” reunites Danes with some of the team that worked on “Homeland,” including showrunner Howard Gordon.
When filming began, only three scripts had been written, so no one knew exactly what was going to happen. “We were all exploring the development of the story in real time,” said Danes, who added his history with the production team gave him “complete trust in them.” Even Rhys didn’t mind the unknown as it suited his portrayal of Neil.
He said, “In a way it’s liberating because then you’re just playing the present and what’s on the page at that moment.” “Sometimes I think when you know the outcome, I have a tendency sometimes to mess with it or do something ridiculous that marks it out. So there’s a freedom in the fact that you don’t know.”
They definitely knew they had to lean into their characters’ unlikely chemistry.
“There was a lot of pyrotechnics involved in these confrontational sessions. There’s a little bit of murder, but that’s not where the tension really lies. They’re hiding a lot from each other. They’re playing with each other but they’re also building a real intimacy and connection that haunts both of them.”
“I mean there’s really nothing I enjoy more than that,” she said.
