Figures from the Association of British Insurers (ABI) show that health insurers will handle a record £4 billion in personal and workplace private health insurance claims in 2024.
According to the report, the total number of people covered by medical insurance will increase by 4% compared with 2023, reaching 6.5 million people in 2024.

ABI data shows that the number of people applying for personal or workplace health insurance will reach 1.8 million in 2024, a 10% increase from 2023.
Workplace scheme claimants were the main driver of this growth.
Insurers processed a record £2.6bn of workplace scheme claims in 2024 alone, a 16% increase compared to 2023, the ABI said, underscoring the increasingly important role employers play in supporting a healthy workforce.
Rebecca Ward, head of health and protection policy at ABI, said: “Another record high for cover, claims and payouts highlights the important role insurers play in keeping the UK population healthy.
“As a complement to life-saving efforts NHShealth insurance continues to help individuals and their loved ones receive timely medical testing, treatment and care when it matters most.
“Our data particularly highlights the value of workplace health insurance programs in supporting employees to stay healthy and at work.”
ABI’s records date back to 1993.
