Since the Scotching temperature holds most of the parts of the southern Ontario, the city of Toronto says it has distributed more than 380 portable air conditioners to senior citizens with low -income.

Free equipment is part of the $ 200,000 pilot program mentioned in the city’s 2025 budget. Officials say the program intends to distribute a total of 500 units to the seniors before the end of summer.

“Everyone needs a safe and comfortable place to call home,” Mayor Olivia Chow said in a statement released on Monday. “This year, we have already seen three historical summer waves which can be dangerous and even fatal.”

“In the city hall, we are taking steps with a new pilot program to provide 500 free air conditioners to lower income seniors, which are the weakest,” he said. “We are working in collaboration with tenant advocates to ensure safe and cheap homes for tenants in our city.”

The program also promises recipients to install the air conditioner units at any cost.

“This is a great pilot program and is an example of support that we should continue to develop in response to an increase in extreme hot weather toronto, expecting experience in the coming years,” City Councilor Paula Fletcher said in a statement.

The air conditioner aid program is one of the latest initiatives in the city to protect people from hot weather. Its heat relief network provides more than 500 quiet places across the city, including libraries, community centers, public pools and air -conditioned civil buildings.
