Chrome for Android adds support for Android password manager: report

By | Published | No Comments

Google Chrome for Android is reportedly adding support for third-party password managers. The browser currently only supports password autofill from its native service, Google Password Manager. Therefore, Android users who prefer and use other password managers cannot use the data saved by the app to log into their accounts on the browser. The tech giant now appears to be addressing this pain point by allowing users to choose which third-party services they want. It’s worth noting that Google Chrome’s desktop app recently upgraded to the standard version of the Safe Browsing feature and offers real-time protection protocols.

spot By @Leopeva64 on X (formerly Twitter) In the stable version of Chrome for Android, the feature allows users to autofill passwords from their preferred password manager. “This feature is now available and Chrome will no longer show you its password manager suggestions if you select the ‘Use another provider’ option,” he said. The whistleblower first highlighted this in November 2023 feature, which was still under development at the time.

This feature is already available in Chrome Stable, Beta, and Canary builds, and users with these builds can use them immediately. However, they first have to activate an experimental flag.according to a Report Via Android Authority, it can be enabled via chrome://flags/#enable-autofill-virtual-view-struct. After activation, the settings will appear.Afterwards, users can go to Chrome settings > Autofill options and select Use another provider. After the setting change, Google will no longer show password suggestions in the login text field.

This setting should automatically prompt Chrome to trigger the user’s default password manager for their Android smartphone. To change the default password manager, users can go to Android Settings and click Passwords and accounts > Password, key and data services and select the password manager of their choice.

It is important to note here that while the feature was running, the report found a bug whereby entering a new password was not prompted for the option to save the password, despite the flag being activated. This can be a problem for users who want to switch password managers immediately. Google appears to still be fine-tuning the feature before its public release.
