December might usually be a quiet time for car retailers, but when there are big targets on board they have to work harder than ever.
when it comes electric carsEvery car manufacturer has a sales target set by the government to achieve each year. Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Mandate states that 28 percent are new this year cars The goods sold by each brand must be completely electric. There are penalties to be paid for companies that do not meet those targets, although there are some solutions such as borrowing allowances from future years, banking surplus allowances or buying credits from others.
Of all new cars registered so far this year, 26.4 percent are fully electric – up slightly from 28 percent. Of course, some carmakers have performed better than others and with the target rising to 33 per cent next year, many will be keen to tally the figures for next year too.
That means a last-minute push for EV sales – some carmakers are more desperate than others to get the final all-electric registration over the line.
Star purchases I’ve spotted include: dacia spring At just £97 a month and its flagship city car rivals luxury-equipped cars Leap Engine T03 At just £120 per month.
However, many other deal stand out especially on new vauxhall fronteraWhich I highly recommend as an excellent, affordable family stay. You can currently get a Frontera for just £120 a month – a sensational price for a great car.
Another highlight is the spectacular renault 4Now eligible for the £3,750 electric car grant from last week, which is available at £182 per month.
All these deals are available through leasing comparison website Leasing.com, with terms and conditions clearly applying. All the deals mentioned require a deposit – often the equivalent of 12 months’ rental – there may also be an arrangement fee and the deals I’ve mentioned have a mileage limit of 5,000 miles per year. However, with the overall average mileage people in the UK drive only 7,100 miles per year, this mileage limit may be sufficient for many people.
You can always change the mileage, so for above an average of 8,000 miles per year, the Frontera will go up to £135 per month and the Renault 4 will still cost a very reasonable £201 per month.

Most deals are over two years, but the Renault 4 looks even better because it’s a three-year deal.
Other notable deals include BYD Dolphin Surf At £133 per month, excellent mg4 At £163 per month, huge Leap Motor C10 at £167 per month and the family-friendly Vauxhall Grandland at £200 per month – all on the same terms.
If a personal lease isn’t right for you and you want a traditional PCP, there are also strong deals available through car dealers. For example, that BYD Dolphin Surf lease deal sounds attractive, but remember the deposit and arrangement fee which totals £1,945. Your local BYD dealer is offering the mid-spec Dolphin Surf Boost (my range of choice) for £189 per month, but only with a £189 deposit. This is a long deal of over 49 months and with a mileage limit of 6,000 miles per year.
If electric isn’t your thing, a plug-in hybrid could do the trick with the cheapest lease being the Chery Tiggo 7 for £207 per month. However, I’d be more tempted to live in a Volkswagen Fiat Estate PHEV for a few years at just £224 a month.
Paul Harrison, chief partnerships officer at Leasing.com, told us: “The ZEV mandate, electric car grants and competition from new entrants have resulted in some exceptional electric new car offerings coming to market. We have seen a 37 per cent increase in overall private new car demand compared to last year, and the market share of battery electric vehicles now accounts for 28 per cent of total inquiries compared to just 19 per cent in 2024. We expect this to exceed this by the end of this year.” up to 30 percent and the quality of new cars coming to market in 2026 will push this figure even higher.
A word of caution on lease deals: they can prove popular and change on a daily basis, so the deals mentioned here may disappear quickly.
