The sex crimes trial of the prime suspect in Madeleine McCann’s case has been put on hold after the defense accused prosecutors of creating a worldwide bias against her.
Lawyers for Christian B, 46, told a German court he could not get a fair trial over rape and sexual assault charges as prosecutors have accused him of kidnapping a British toddler Madeleine McCann Disappeared in Portugal 17 years ago.
Defense lawyer Atilla Ayak asked the judge to remove a prosecutor from the trial in the German city of Braunschweig.
Christian B, who is covered by German privacy laws, has been charged with three rapes and two sexual assaults, crimes he is alleged to have committed while living in Portugal for more than 20 years. He denies the allegations, which are unrelated to the McCann case.
The defense team said that in statements, press conferences and media interviews, German prosecutors gave the impression that Christian B killed Madeleine, even though he was not charged in connection with her disappearance. charges, and denies any involvement.

In tense exchanges, prosecutors accused the defense of using stalling tactics to delay the appearance of a key witness, Christian B. Kennedy.
Investigators focused on Christian B in Madeleine’s case in 2017 when his former friend Helge Busching told investigators that his friend “admitted” to the kidnapping.
He claimed that during a pub conversation Christian B told him: “She didn’t scream when I took her away.”

Investigators never found the tape, but Mr Bussin’s evidence laid the foundation for two rape charges at trial.

Christian B denies the accusations
German drifter Christian B is also accused of raping former Irish holiday representative Hazel Behan in Portugal in 2005 and sexually assaulting two young girls.
He is currently serving a seven-year prison sentence for raping an elderly American woman in Praia da Luz. It was in this Portuguese resort that Madeleine disappeared in 2007 from the holiday apartment she rented from her family.
The sex crimes trial is expected to continue into the summer.
