China The US National Security Agency was accused of a cyber attack on its national timing center after an investigation on Sunday said that any damage to related facilities could disrupt network communications, financial systems and power supplies.
Ministry of State Security The WeChat post alleged that the US agency had taken advantage of vulnerabilities in the messaging services of a foreign mobile phone brand to steal sensitive information from the devices of National Time Service Center employees in 2022. The brand was not specified in it.
It said the US agency also used 42 types of “special cyber attack weapons” to target several internal network systems of the center and attempted to infiltrate the system at a key time between 2023 and 2024.
It said it had evidence but did not provide it in the post.
It states that the Time Center is responsible for generating and distributing China’s standard time, in addition to providing timing services to industries such as communications, finance, electricity, transportation and defense. It had provided guidance to the Center to eliminate the risks.
“All the US does is blame others and repeatedly exaggerate claims about Chinese cyber threats,” it said.
