Chillai Kalan, which starts from 21 December and continues till 31 January, is considered to be the coldest phase of winter in the valley. This period is marked by sub-zero temperatures, intense cold waves, frozen water bodies and frequent snowfall, which often disrupts normal life and connectivity.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday said the administration is fully prepared to deal with snowfall during Chillai Kalan, PTI reported. Chairing a review meeting on winter preparedness for both Jammu region and Kashmir Valley, Abdullah said all necessary arrangements have been made.

“I reviewed both the divisions, especially the areas where there is a possibility of snowfall – all the districts of the valley and the higher reaches of Jammu. The administration has finalized all the preparations, but it will be known only after the snowfall starts whether these will be adequate or not,” he told reporters as quoted by PTI.
The Chief Minister also expressed hope that the fresh rains will help in reducing air pollution levels and boost winter tourism in the Union Territory.
With the onset of Chillai Kalan, residents are prepared to face severe cold conditions in the coming weeks.
