Five other people have been taken to hospital after a Toyota Auris wrecked on the northbound carriageway just before Stebbington Junction and was struck by a Volkswagen Touran at about 6.20pm.
The little boy inside the Toyota died, while five other passengers were taken to Peterborough City Hospital with serious injuries.
The driver of the Volkswagen, a 64-year-old man, sustained minor injuries.
He was later arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and bailed until 20 March.
Cambridgeshire Police are now appealing for witnesses dash cam Footage to aid investigation.
Sergeant David McCluvan said: “Our thoughts are with the parents and family of this young child who has tragically lost his life in this collision.
“The family is being supported by specialist family liaison officers.
“I would appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision or who has dashcam footage but is unable to stop at the scene to contact us.”
