Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today conducted a major inspection of Tawi Riverfront Development Project under Jammu Smart City Limited (JSCL). The project aims to revive the banks of the Tawi River by integrating flood conservation with entertaining and commercial infrastructure to create a dynamic urban location.
The inspection also included Chief Minister, Nasir Aslam Wani and Advisors of Ministers of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, IT, S&T and Transport, Satish Sharma.
Commissioner JMC and CEO JSCL, Devas Yadava; Additional CEO JSCL and Joint Commissioner JMC, Subah Mehta; Director Projects JSCL, Sunil Thesu; Senior GM JSCL, Rajesh Abrol; AE JSCL, Akhil Samal; And on this occasion, senior engineers and officials of UEED Jammu and Irrigation and Flood Control Department were also present.
The Chief Minister reviewed the progress of civil works under Phase-I of the project, which extends from Bhagwati Nagar Barrage to Bikram Chowk Bridge. He was informed that more than 97 percent of the work under Part-A, including the construction component of Phase-I, is completed. The target of completion has been set for September 2025.
During inspection, the Chief Minister reviewed the major features of the project, including the development of multi-level walks with both banks of the river and a central island, construction of flood mitigation infrastructure such as diaphragm and walls, maintaining ghat safety measures on existing bridges, establishment of a central business and recreation and establishment of diveted polls.
The CM was informed that under Part-A, the length of a total embankment of 2.70 km is being developed, which includes four promines of different widths and regained about 23 hectares of land. Part-B of the project will include the construction of finishing works such as connecting rhodes, food courts, Viaducts, toilet blocks, horticulture and prime floors.
The Chief Minister expressed satisfaction with the speed of execution and emphasized the importance of its completion on time. He said that this project is not only about urban beautification, but about shaping a new identity for Jammu focused on the historic Tawi River. He said that the initiative will fulfill both ecological and economic objectives.
He also highlighted the ability of the project to increase tourism, generate employment and provide sustainable commercial real estate options including green buildings, parks, sports areas and cultural plazas.
The Chief Minister reviewed the mudification strategy being prepared by CBRE currently, which would support the expansion of riverfront development from Tawi Bridge to Sidhara Bridge at future stages.
The Chief Minister appreciated the coordinated efforts of JSCL, JMC and Water Power Department. He directed the concerned authorities to maintain strict adherence to quality and timelines, ensuring stability in the execution of the project and public facility.
