Raipur, Oct 9 (IANS) In a significant breakthrough in the ongoing anti-leftist insurgency operations, security forces successfully defused a deadly Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by Maoists in the forested hills of village Iknar under the jurisdiction of Dhanora police station in Narayanpur district.
The operation was led by Robinson Guriya, Superintendent of Police (SP), Narayanpur, IPS Akshay Sabadra, Additional SP and Ajay Kumar, Additional SP.
Acting on intelligence inputs, a joint team of District Reserve Guard (DRG) and Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) launched de-mining and search operations early Thursday morning.
During the search, the team recovered a 5 kg Kukar Command IED – a device commonly used by Maoists to target patrolling security personnel.
The BDS team defused the explosive on the spot following strict safety protocols, thereby averting a possible tragedy.
“This recovery is a reminder of the persistent threat posed by Maoists, who are putting people’s lives at risk by indiscriminately planting explosives,” SP Robinson Guria said.
“Our forces are alert and committed to make Narayanpur a Left Wing Extremism free district.”
The operation underlines the growing momentum of anti-Maoist efforts in the Bastar region, where more than 33 IEDs have been defused this year alone.
It also follows a wave of recent surrenders by disillusioned Maoist cadres, including 16 individuals – nine of whom had a combined reward of Rs 48 lakh – who had laid down arms in Narayanpur, citing exploitation and ideological disillusionment. The security agencies have urged citizens to report suspicious objects and activities, assuring anonymity and a reward of Rs 5,000 for actionable information.
The DRG and BDS teams have been appreciated for their precision and bravery in the operation.
Officials stressed that such seizures are important in disrupting Maoist supply chains and strategic planning.
With increased surveillance, community participation and coordinated patrolling, the district administration is continuously manning sensitive areas, ensuring safe passage for citizens and enhancing confidence among the local population.
