Raipur/Bijapur, Nov 11 (IANS) A Maoist was taken into custody after he was injured during a fresh encounter with security forces in the dense forests of Annaram in Tarlagud area of Bijapur district on Tuesday evening. Police officials gave this information.
This is another tactical advantage in the continued anti-Naxal operations in the volatile interstate border areas of Chhattisgarh. The gun battle began as part of an intensive search and destruction operation targeting Maoist hideouts in the forested areas along the Maharashtra and Telangana borders.
Police forces in Bijapur confirmed that the injured Maoist has been shifted to a secure medical facility under heavy security, where he is undergoing treatment for gunshot wounds.
Interrogations begin under controlled conditions to extract important information about the group’s structure, leadership hierarchy and planned activities.
Officials believe the detained person can provide vital clues about the supply routes and safe houses used by the dwindling Maoist network in the tri-junction area.
The operation, launched under a coordinated framework involving multiple district units, began early in the day following credible intelligence about a small group of armed cadres passing through Annaram sector.
Joint teams of the District Reserve Guard, Special Task Force and supporting troops of the Central Reserve Police Force moved across rugged terrain, through narrow ravines and dense forests to flush out the insurgents. Contact was established in the late afternoon when security personnel intercepted the Maoist squad, leading to a brief but intense exchange of fire.
Amidst the chaos, a cadre was shot and subdued by the advancing forces. The remaining members managed to disperse deep into the forest, leading to immediate expansion of the cordon to prevent their regrouping or escaping across the state border.
Search operations continue unabated in the Annaram-Tarlagud belt, with additional forces deployed to search the surrounding hill ranges and riverine areas. Drone surveillance and canine units have been pressed into service to track footprints and detect possible caches of weapons or explosives.
Security forces remain on high alert for counter-ambushe attacks, a common tactic of Maoists in response to such setbacks.
A senior police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the operation was in line with a broader strategy to dominate key Maoist areas before the onset of winter, when insurgents traditionally attempt to replenish the ranks.
“Every neutralization or detention weakens their operational backbone,” the officer said. The police officer said a comprehensive briefing, including the identity of the detained cadre, recovery of weapons and if there were any more casualties, would be issued after the area is completely cleared and the operation is over.
For now, the focus is on maintaining pressure and ensuring that no Maoist elements regroup in the strategically sensitive border corridor.
