Raipur, Nov 13 (IANS) Remote villages of Dhamtari district and a large section of its tribal population, which remained deprived of clean water for decades, have now got access to clean tap water under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM).
The entire village, which faced ‘drought’ conditions for most of the year, especially during summers, and had to rely mostly on temporary wells and ponds for their water needs, is today feeling relieved due to direct tap water connectivity to their homes under the centrally run JJM scheme.
Many villagers, speaking to IANS, said that their days of struggle to drink contaminated ‘red water’, though not completely over, have reduced to a great extent.
Local people, while sharing their experiences on the radical change in the conditions of the village, said that in the last few years, excellent work has been done in Dhamtari district under JJM, due to which clean water is being supplied to all the houses in the district through tap connections.
Many people said that earlier they used to quench their thirst with ‘red water’ coming from rivers, ponds, wells and hand pumps, which had a direct impact on their health. This caused many diseases including diarrhea. Moreover, they had to travel several kilometers for water, and the situation was more troublesome during summer.
JJM brought a revolutionary change in his life and for this he expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“Earlier we used to drink water from rivers and ponds, due to which we often fell sick. After the installation of tap water under Jal Jeevan Mission, we are getting clean water and our health has improved,” a beneficiary told IANS.
Many other villagers expressed similar views, claiming that tap water connections and clean water supply not only improved their health but also significantly improved their standard of living.
According to government estimates, when the JJM Mission was launched in 2019, only 3.23 crore households had access to tap water. Since then, 12.48 crore additional households have been connected, one of the fastest infrastructure expansions in the country, taking the total household connections to 15.72 crore.
