On Tuesday, December 16, around 34 Naxalites surrendered in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district, out of which 26 had a total reward of ₹84 lakh.
Seven women were included among the 34 Maoist cadres. According to news agency IANS, he surrendered before senior CRPF and police officials.
Maoist cadres took the oath of allegiance to the Indian Constitution and vowed to live a peaceful life. They received an incentive of ₹50,000 each under the state’s rehabilitation policy with immediate effect.
According to IANS, Bijapur Superintendent of Police (SP) Jitendra Kumar Yadav appealed to other Naxalites to “give up violence without any fear”, saying that the government’s policies “ensure a safe, respectable future”.
The surrendered Naxalite cadres were mainly active in the South Sub-Zonal Bureau, and also included members of the Andhra-Odisha Border (AOB) Division, Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee (DKSZC) and Telangana State Committee.
According to IANS, the key personalities include chairmen, platoon leaders, militia commanders and a divisional committee member (DVCM) of the Keralapal Area Committee carrying a reward of ₹8 lakh, along with several members of the People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) and area committee members (ACMs), along with office-bearers of frontal organizations like DAKMS and CNM.
According to the SP, the key cadres were identified as Pandaru Punem (45), Rukni Hemla (25), Deva Uika (22), Ramlal Poyam (27) and Motu Punem (21), all of whom carried a reward of Rs 8 lakh, news agency PTI reported.
The surrender was reportedly influenced by the Chhattisgarh government’s Puna Margam: Rehabilitation to Rejuvenation campaign and the Niyad Nellanar scheme to bring development to remote villages.
This was made possible by the combined efforts of Bastar Fighters, Cobra and CRPF battalions as well as District Reserve Guard (DRG) and Special Task Force (STF).
In the last two years, 824 Naxalites in Dantewada district have left violence and joined the mainstream and overall, more than 2,200 Naxalites have surrendered in the state of Chhattisgarh.
