Chennai, Oct 22 (IANS) Amidst the intensification of Northeast Monsoon and incessant rain lashing the city, Chief Minister MK Stalin has directed all departments to intensify preventive and relief measures to deal with possible floods and related emergencies across Chennai.

Following the Chief Minister’s instructions, Chennai Police Commissioner M. Arun has issued orders to conduct extensive security and rescue operations in sensitive areas.

Under his supervision, 12 special rescue teams have been formed to coordinate immediate response efforts across the city, each headed by a Deputy Commissioner of Police.

According to police sources, these rescue units include trained swimmers, personnel from national and state disaster response forces and local volunteers experienced in flood relief.

Teams have been strategically deployed to ensure quick deployment in case of waterlogging, road blockage or emergency evacuation. Apart from rescue squads, the city police has set up 39 dedicated control rooms to handle distress calls and coordinate emergency assistance.

23 of these “mini control rooms” have been set up in south Chennai alone, where many low-lying areas are vulnerable to floods.

Additional Commissioner of Police (South Chennai) Dr Kannan said citizens in distress can contact the police emergency helpline number 100 for immediate help.

“Once we receive the call, our rescue personnel will reach the affected location without any delay. We are fully equipped to deal with rain-related emergencies,” he assured.

Senior officials of the Police Commissioner’s office confirmed that coordination with the Greater Chennai Corporation, fire and rescue services and disaster management teams is continuing round the clock.

“All necessary manpower, equipment and vehicles are ready. Chennai Police is fully prepared to face the challenges posed by the heavy monsoon,” a senior officer said.

With more rain predicted over the next 48 hours, officials have appealed to residents to avoid waterlogged areas and follow official advice closely.

The city is on alert, with emergency teams keeping a 24-hour vigil to protect life and property.
