Chennai: Rao Park, the prestigious view of Chennai in Maylapur, is a set for a major facelift, in which Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) announced a redevelopment project of Rs 12.22 crore under the ‘Namakku Naam’ scheme.
The purpose of this project is to modernize one of the most frequent green places in the city, preserving its cultural and community importance. The redevelopment plan includes the dedicated reading space, refurbished gazebos and the construction of a fully equipped badminton court.
Long -lasting issues such as unequal running trails, deformed lighting and deteriorating boundary walls will be addressed in the initial stage. Once these basic improvements are made, new features such as fountains, shaded seating places and a re -designed entrance will be offered.
To enhance visitors and ensure safety, the park will also be equipped with CCTV monitoring, RO water features and a modern sprinkler system to maintain water features and greenery. Design emphasizes children, senior citizens and daily walkers equally, emphasizing inclusion.
The blueprint for redevelopment was finalized after a geo -technical survey, including the response from local stakeholders.
Suggestions such as better hygiene, advanced toilets, and a strong drainage system have been included in the plan.
Nageswara Rao Park holds a special place in the cultural fabric of Mylapore, historically serves as a center for art and music, especially during the Margie season. With the proposed upgrade, GCC has intended to revive this role, as well as place the park as a modern recreational space for the city’s growing population.
Officials said the project is expected to be completed by February 2026, ensuring that the revival park would be prepared before the upcoming state assembly elections. However, the park will face stopping closure during the construction phase, especially when trail works and civil upgrade are running.
Officials have indicated that efforts will be made to reduce disruption for regular visitors. Once completed, the redevelopment park will mix tradition and modernity, which will offer both a cultural site and a recreational return.
For the residents of Maylapur and the wide Chennai community, the project not only represents the upgradation of the infrastructure, but also represents the renewal of a beloved public landmark.
