chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor Following a slow start to the Women’s Champions League campaign she said her team’s 1–1 draw with Twente was “not a good result at all”.
The Blues put in an impressive performance in Enschede but Bompastor’s decision to make seven changes to the team that drew with Manchester United did not pay off.
And the result could have been worse, with Dannik van Ginkel’s brilliant curling strike giving the home side the lead after just over an hour, before Sandy Baltimore’s penalty saved his side’s defeat.
“This is not a good outcome at all,” Bompastor said. “We wanted to start the campaign with three points. Tonight, out of possession, even if we conceded a goal, I am quite happy. In possession you need to show more desire when you play this goal.
“We created a lot of chances and couldn’t score more than one. We had a lot of situations in the box and we had 18 crosses, only six times we were first on the ball. That’s not enough when you play Champions League games.”
Maika Hamano spurned Chelsea’s best chances, turning the ball over the crossbar from the edge of the box after Orion Jean-Francois’s cut-back, while Sjoke Nusken and Guro Reiten also missed good starts.
“I told my players after the game that the bad result is tough right now but we need to stick together and learn from it,” Bompastor said. “This is the only thing we can do, stick together and find solutions.
“We want to be an attacking team, we want to play a high block. I don’t think Twente created a lot but once was enough for them to score. We took risks in our play but I think it’s the right thing to do. We need to dominate more than what we showed.”
