Chat GPT creator open artificial intelligence A “head of readiness” is being recruited to tackle the dangers of artificial intelligence.
“It’s going to be a stressful job,” said CEO Sam Altman, who announced that the company was seeking to address “real challenges” posed by the technology it develops.
OpenAI has sometimes been accused of exaggerating the power and dangers of its technology as a way to promote its tools and encourage investment. But it was also a theme of real concern last year.
These include concerns that vulnerable people are turning to AI systems such as ChatGPT to help in times of emotional crisis, and that the technology may actually exacerbate these mental health problems.
Mr. Altman noted these concerns when he announced his new position. “We foresaw the potential impact of models on mental health in 2025; we’re only now seeing models become so good at computer security that they start to uncover critical vulnerabilities,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
“We have a solid foundation in measuring growing capabilities, but we are entering a world that requires a more nuanced understanding and measurement of how these capabilities can be abused, and how we can limit these shortcomings in our products and the world so that we all can enjoy huge benefits,” he wrote. “These questions are difficult and have little precedent; many ideas that sound good have some real edge cases.”
OpenAI has flagged its preparations to ensure the dangers of new AI models are limited by what it calls “increasingly sophisticated safeguards.” The new work will “extend, strengthen and guide the program so that our safety standards are aligned with the capabilities of the systems we develop,” OpenAI’s ad said.
According to the same ad, the position comes with a salary of $555,000 and an equity stake in OpenAI.
