OpenAI boss Sam Altman predicts this will be the next big breakthrough in achieving supernatural artificial intelligence This will happen when AI systems achieve “infinite, exhaustive memory.”
Recent progress by the ChatGPT creator, as well as its competitors working on large language models (LLMs), has focused on improving the reasoning capabilities of AI.
But speaking on the Big Technology Podcast, Mr Altman said the development he was most looking forward to was AI being able to remember “every detail of your entire life”, and his company was working towards reaching this point in 2026.
Mr. Altman said, “Even if you have the best personal assistant in the world… they can’t remember every word you say in your life.”
“They can’t read every document you write. They can’t see all of your actions every day and remember every little detail. They can’t be participants in your life to that extent. And no human being has an infinite, perfect memory.
“And AI will certainly be able to do that. We actually talk about this a lot — right now, memory is still very raw, very early.”
His comments come just weeks after he reportedly announced a “Code Red” status at his company following the launch of Google’s latest Gemini model.
Google touted Gemini 3 as “a new era of intelligence” when it released the updated AI app in November, with the model achieving record scores in several industry benchmark tests.
Mr Altman downplayed the urgency of the threat posed by Gemini 3, claiming it was not unusual OpenAI Responding decisively to new competition.
“I think it’s better not to panic and take immediate action when a potential competitive threat emerges,” he said.
“Same thing happened with us in the past, earlier this year too deepseek…Gemini 3 hasn’t – or at least hasn’t yet – had the impact we were worried it might have, but it has identified some weaknesses in our product offering and strategy and we’re addressing them very quickly.
to win ai raceThe OpenAI boss said the strategy is to “build the best models, build the best products around them, and have enough infrastructure to serve it at scale.”
According to OpenAI, ChatGPT currently has about 800 million users, representing about 71 percent of the AI app market share. This compares to 87 percent this time last year.
For comparison, Google’s market share has grown from about 5 percent to more than 15 percent, with Gemini recently hitting 650 million users.
